WhatsApp API Phone Number Registration & Migration Guide (2026) | Convonite

Connecting Your Business Phone Number

Connecting Your Business Phone Number

To use the WhatsApp Business Platform (API), you must register a dedicated phone number. This number becomes the digital identity of your brand on WhatsApp. Unlike the standard App, once a number is connected to the API, it is hosted on Meta’s cloud servers to handle high-volume messaging and automation.

Number Eligibility & Requirements

Before you begin, ensure your chosen number meets these Meta standards for 2026:
  • Fresh or Migrated: The number must not be currently active on the "WhatsApp Messenger" or "WhatsApp Business" mobile apps.
  • Voice/SMS Capable: You must be able to receive an international SMS or a Voice Call on this number to verify ownership.
  • Supported Types: Mobile numbers and Landlines are supported.
  • Not Supported: Short codes, premium-rate numbers, and some Universal Access Numbers (UAN) cannot be used.

Scenario A: Using a Brand New Number

If you are starting with a new number (recommended), the process is near-instant:
  1. Enter Number: In your Convonite dashboard, enter the phone number with your country code.
  2. Choose Verification: Select SMS or Voice Call.
  3. Verify: Enter the 6-digit OTP received.
  4. Active: Your number is now linked to the API and ready for use.

Scenario B: Using Your Existing App Number

If you want to keep your current business number but move it to the API, you must migrate it.
  1. Backup Data: Export any important chat history from your mobile app (API migration does not automatically move old chats).
  2. Delete the Account: Go to WhatsApp Settings > Account > Delete My Account.
    • Note: Simply uninstalling the app is not enough; the account must be deleted from WhatsApp servers.
  1. Wait: Wait approximately 3–5 minutes for Meta’s systems to recognize the number is free.
  2. Connect to API: Follow the "Scenario A" steps above to register it on the Convonite platform.

The Verification Process (Step-by-Step)

Phase
Action
1. Selection
Choose your country and enter the number (e.g., +91 98765 43210).
2. Method
Select SMS for mobile numbers or Voice for landlines.
3. OTP
Receive and enter the 6-digit code.
4. 2FA Setup
Create a 6-digit PIN. This is mandatory for API security.
5. Approved
Once verified, your status will change to "Connected" in Meta Business Manager.

Critical Tips for Success

  • Landlines: If using a landline, ensure you can bypass any IVR (e.g., "Press 1 for Sales") temporarily so the automated verification call can reach a human or a direct recording.
  • 2FA: If you are migrating a number from another API provider (BSP), you must disable the 6-digit Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on the old platform first.
  • Downtime: During the 5-minute migration process, you will not receive messages. Once connected to the API, messages will flow directly into your Convonite shared inbox.

 How Convonite Helps

Connecting a number involves technical "handshakes" with Meta’s Cloud API. Convonite’s Embedded Signup simplifies this into a 2-minute visual flow, handling the backend registration and certificate generation automatically so you don't have to deal with complex code.
